INTRODUCTION:
Everybody knows auto Supras generally post quicker elapsed times in the quarter-mile than cars equipped with manual transmissions. So, when a 6MT car does something significant at the drag strip, you know at least three things exist: The car is making real good power; Someone knows a bit about chassis set-up, and; Someone knows how to DRIVE. In a car that's actually a bit heavier than a stock 6MT twin-turbo Supra, Ryan Woon posted four successive nine-second runs at two different tracks in just a week's time. Starting with a 9.98 run at Speedworld in Phoenix, Arizona, Ryan backed it up one week later at the recently concluded Vegas 2K3, posting 9.96, 9.84 and 9.74 timeslips over three consecutive runs! Congratulations, Ryan, for making about as big a splash any member has made coming onto the website containing, "...the world's most beautiful and powerful Supras".
GENERAL:
As some of you know, I own Wide Open Throttle Motorsports. I started the company back in 1999 and my shop car was a Twin-Turbo Supra! This section could be very long, but I’ll give everyone the short version. I actually first encountered the mkiv Supra when my Mother got one back in 1995. It was a Stock Twin-Turbo Auto and, at the time, I was road racing a Viper GTS. I didn’t like the Supra at all compared to the GTS, but it was stock car, so that definitely made a difference in my initial assessment of the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, I met up with some guys in Phoenix and one had a BPU Supra. After I rode in that car, I was hooked.
My first Supra was a 94 White 6spd that needed a new rear quarter, wing and rear bumper. I picked it up for $14,500, fixed it up and had about $18,500 into it when I ended up selling it for $24,500. When I first saw Jim Lieferman’s 97 Royal Sapphire Pearl, I knew that would be my next Supra. So, after I sold my white 94 I got a 97 RSP Auto Twin-Turbo. I loved it, but I needed a manual tranny again so I sold that one and got a 98 Royal Sapphire Pearl with 13k miles. I bought it from a dealer in Vegas for $36,500 and a few months down the road I sold it for $44,500.
After my first few Supras, and the profits I made on them, I decided to buy and sell them on the side. I went back to Maryland a few years back to pick up a Quicksilver Supra with 4k miles and, on the way back, I stayed in Houston for a few days. That was my first time driving a single turbo Supra (Kean Wang’s) and that was when I knew I had to have a single turbo car.
I started attending the Vegas meets back in 1998, and every year since then, I’ve had a different Supra at the meet. One year, I didn’t have one at the time the meet rolled around so I bought a T66 just for the meet and took it out and ran a 10.5@134. To this day, I have not had the same Supra at a Vegas meet. That string of different cars every year continued this year for Vegas 2K3 as I sold my RSP 97 GT74 car and now have my 98 Quicksilver Car which is the car I took to Vegas. I’ve had about 17 Supras to date, many of them built, but none of them like my latest!
After all these years, my favorite color is Quicksilver. As everyone knows it’s the rarest color and very hard to find. I owned one in the summer of 2002, but it had too many miles for me so I sold that one and, through the grapevine, I heard of one back east but it wasn’t for sale. Well, anything is for sale for a price. I contacted the owner, made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and bought it!
I bought my current Supra a week before the TX Meet this year. It came with a TO4R kit, fuel system, AEM, etc. As soon as I got it, I had the entire car stripped and rebuilt with all new components. Everything on the car was basically new when I got it, but I have to have things my way and I have to do the work. I took the car to the TX Meet unfinished and finished it on Friday when we got there. It ended up having some boost issues at the meet but went 10.5@136 at 24psi.
When I got back from the TX Meet, I decided to build a motor for the car and do a bunch of things to it since I didn’t have time to do much before the meet. You’ll read about all of those mods down below.
ENGINE:
My 97 RSP car made high 800s to the wheels and, during one pass down the track, I had a rod failure. It let go at about 140mph and I was very lucky to not run over my own oil and slam into a wall. After that experience, a bit nerve wracking to say the least, I knew I had to build a motor to handle the power I knew my car was going to make. I sold the long block out of my QS car and bought a brand new long block. Everything was decked, the bottom end was bored 20 over, 1mm oversize valves, Ferrea valve springs, retainers, lockers and keepers, Carillo rods, custom spec JE pistons, and more. All built and assembled by yours truly with the help of some employees at www.WOTM.com.
FUEL:
My fuel system consists of a custom high flow fuel rail, 1000cc injectors, SX Regulator and filter and dual Walbro pumps. With this set-up, I decided to do a dual-feed fuel rail and center return.
BRAKES/CHASSIS:
The car has Tein HA coilovers without the pillow-ball mounts and, for now, stock brakes. I’ve always wanted to do a Brembo big brake upgrade, but I have 16in CCW drag skinnies and they don’t fit over the big Brembos, so they’ve been put on the back burner until I retire from drag racing. But, who knows when that will be!?
WHEELS/TIRES:
My favorite wheels have always been Blitz Type 03s. I think they are a superb looking wheel and no other wheel has the lips they do. They are huge-looking and the wheel has a timeless look. So after many sets of the Blitz Type 03s, I finally broke down and decided to seriously consider another type of wheel. After some research, I decided on polished CCW split spokes, with 19X10s in the front and 19X11s in the rear. The wheels roll on 265/30/19s in the front and 315/25/19s in the rear. This wheel/tire combination has given me a look I really like, still in keeping with the WOTM tradition of keeping it clean and simple. Judging from the reaction to the car at the Vegas 2K3 show and shine, I think many others feel the same way as I do about the car with its new shoes. I also have a set of 16in CCWs with slicks and ET Streets for going down the track. I also have a set of CCWs to road race this car with 315 and 285 Hoosiers.
INTERIOR:
This Supra has a custom powder coated chrome-moly roll cage. It has sidebars and, the way they are installed, the stock seats must be utilized. It is a 6-point cage and it is legal to 10.0. I have a TRD steering wheel, 10k tach, Defi gauges, and a few other small things in the interior. I like to keep my cars clean and simple. I can’t stand the cluttered look.
EXTERIOR:
After having a full body kit on my RSP car, I decided to leave this car stock bodied. They attract less attention and have much less maintenance. On my new Quicksilver, I put on a TRD-style carbon fiber hood, and a Rod Millen 3-piece carbon fiber wing. That’s probably going to be it for now, although I have always wanted a wide body, so that may be in the works sometime in the future.
PERFORMANCE:
This section could also be very long, but I’ll keep it somewhat short. This car made 745rwhp at 38psi when I first built it. We then discovered the 3-inch DP/MP on the car was the biggest restriction and needed to come off. I am now fabricating custom true 4-inch DP/MPs for our single turbo kits which use the HKS stainless steel manifold. After installing the 4-inch DP/MP, we made 881rwhp and 787ft/lbs at 32psi. For kicks and giggles, we chilled the intercooler on the dyno and it made 935rwhp at the same 32 psi of boost. I have an assortment of various dyno graphs on www.WOTM.com and you can see how well the new dual ball-bearing GT turbos spool. They make incredible torque as well. The next time I am on the dyno, we’ll do a 35psi+ pull and see how she does. I have never had NOS on a car but I might put a bottle in this one just to make over 1000rwhp. At 23psi my car makes more than 720rwhp. A few months ago, it went 10.1@144 at 30psi and 3000ft elevation. As events turned out, the 10.1@144 pass was a harbinger of good things to come.
After years of low 10-second runs in, essentially, underpowered cars, I finally cracked the nines in a big way! By underpowered, I mean not having enough power to run nines with my old T-66 turbos. With the WOTM.com dual ball-bearing turbos, not having enough power to run nines is, thankfully, a dim memory, as on September 26,2003 at Speed World in Phoenix, Arizona, the car ran 9.98@144, with 60ft., and eighth-mile times of 1.58 and 6.52@115, respectively. Although I was ecstatic with the run, I knew she had more in her because of a recurring ignition problem on the high end. During the time between this run and the beginning of Vegas 2K3, we fixed the ignition problem and I went to Vegas optimistic that, if I didn’t break or have some other type of bad luck, I could, at least, match what I had done a week earlier. Still, I couldn’t have imagined how well things would go in Vegas.
The track was hooking well and the temperature got cooler as the evening wore on. On three successive runs, the car ran 9.96@142.18, 9.84@143.96 and 9.74@145.25, making my QS car the world’s quickest 6-speed streetcar in the quarter-mile! For the second year in a row, I won my class. Oh yes, Vegas has been VERY, VERY good to me. For these three runs, my 60ft., times were 1.58, 1.54 and another 1.54, respectively. My 330ft., and eighth-mile times for these runs were 4.30/6.49@112.89, 4.23/6.40@112.65 and 4.19/6.34@115. Too bad I was only able to get three runs in during the eliminations. I actually think there is more in her for the following reasons: (1) Vegas is at a higher elevation than Speedworld; (2) I ran 3 psi less in Vegas than I did at Speedworld a week earlier, with all of my dyno research showing, on average, I can expect about 20 rwhp for every pound of boost; (3) With my high-end ignition misfire fixed, the 145 mph pass at Vegas should produce a trap of 2-3 mph faster in Arizona, even faster at a track like RCR in San Antonio. Only time will tell, I guess. I’m just so happy to get that nine-second, 800-pound gorilla off my back!! There are videos of my car going down the track and on the dyno on www.WOTM.com.

And maybe Larry at SP for just being Larry And last but not least Stacey Barnett for his sponsorship on VP Fuel!
EXTRA:
A lot has happened since the car first joined TO4R.com. I’ll fill everyone in with the latest round of modifications and track results...
As some of you know I had a nitrous backfire and an engine bay fire last November. It was convenient because I wanted to repaint and clear coat the engine bay anyway! Well not really but at least I can joke about it right :) After the fire I redid the turbo setup on the car and the fuel system. I put the 1600cc injectors back in the car, a third Walbro pump, a WOTM billet 3 pump hanger, and new Virtual Works Racing turbo kit with a GT47-80mm turbo and I took the nitrous OFF the car. On that setup I made 1105rwhp on the dyno and ran 9.39@155mph my very first pass of 05 since the car was put back together. The next pass after that I lifted the head due to having stock size head studs. The motor came out and I was in a huge time crunch to get the car ready for a few races in March. With the help of Nero and Titan Motorsports I got another fully built engine in the car and swapped to 272 cams and took it back to the dyno and track.
That very first night of testing the car ran 9.20@160mph! The car also dynoed 1134rwhp and 900ft/lbs of torque. The engine is still a 3.0L engine and still stock compression, no nitrous. The car raced in March and won the Scandalous Racing Pro 10.5in class here in Arizona with 4 passes ranging from 9.2 to 9.8 and then a week later it won the Battle Ground Arizona event at Speedworld with a 9.4, 9.3, and 9.2 again.
On July 18th the car made 1170rwhp on 35psi and a 70 shot. The nitrous was activated at 5000rpm.
Check out the new pics and the new WOTM Posters coming out soon. Also stay tuned for some new mods... Maybe a custom 3.4L stroker, maybe some nitrous, maybe a bigger turbo, who knows!!!
