Supra Dupra

"The year was 1965 and your Guide was working Toronto's annual Sportsman's Show, which included automobiles along with a variety of sporting attractions. I'd been hired as a pitchman from one of those rotating stands that automakers use as a magnet to draw show visitors.
The money was good and I gave it my best shot, yet I was frequently distracted by a car from a competing manufacturer. Toyota was easily overlooked in those days, when consumers were still suspicious of Japanese products, but this baby was absolutely sensational. It was as sleek as any sports car the Europeans could produce and the specs promised exceptional performance.
That car was the Toyota 2000GT, a high-performance grand tourer which fully realized the skills of its designers and engineers through its long-nosed, balanced styling and six-cylinder, twin-cam engine. It garnered three world records and 13 international records.
It was also, I should point out, a joint exercise involving Yamaha. The builder of high-performance motorcycles added valuable experience at a time when Toyota was known as a producer of reliable family sedans and 4X4 Land Cruisers, hardly a force in international motorsport. (Times have changed, as anyone who watched Cristiano DaMatta leading the 2003 British Grand Prix in a Toyota F1 car will acknowledge.)
Nevertheless Toyota did enter the 2000GT in competition, finishing third in the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway and winning the Fuji 24-hour Race of 1967. In a 78-hour endurance test, the Toyota 2000GT broke three long-distance world speed records.
Built on a sturdy X-backbone frame, the 2000GT's 4-wheel independent suspension had double-wishbones front and back. The engine, a 1988cc DOHC 6-cylinder unit with 3 Solex carburetors, produced 150 horsepower, good for a top speed of over 130 mph. Other features included a close-ratio 5-speed transmission, limited slip differential, and Japan's first 4-wheel vacuum-boosted disc brakes.
Considering that this car was years ahead of the Datsun/Nissan 240ZX, one wonders why Toyota was reluctant to bring the 2000GT to North America. On the other hand, GM owes Toyota an apology, for the Opel GT coupe of the 1970's is a flat-out copy."
